Infinera DTN: a quality ROADM for managing and protecting network traffic
Whether you’re here to learn more, to repair what you’ve got, or to source a replacement. We’ve got you covered.
Platform details
Infinera’s DTN platform was the first in the world to combine optic speed with digital networking simplicity. It benefits from a plug-and-play architecture and GMPLS-based smart networking features. It is a superb choice if you need a ROADM to transport, manage and protect your networking traffic.
The DTN delivers up to 6.4 TB/s of transmission scalability per fibre alongside 800GB/s of DWDM capacity per day, so you can be confident that this ROADM will cope with your network’s shifting demands.
You’ll find support for SONET/SDH, OTN, video, SAN and Ethernet services inside the DTN alongside compatibility with two-, three- and four-way junction sites. The reliance on the popular 20RU form factor means that it slots into plenty of existing racks, and it also supports multi-chassis configurations across multiple racks.
Elsewhere, the DTN’s feature set rounds out with integrated ODU1 digital switching, full digital performance monitoring for easier management, and integrated digital service protection. It’s a top choice if you want to manage network traffic, and the platform can be quickly supplied by TXO.
Specifications
Transmission scalability up to 6.4 Tb/s per fiber | Eliminate capacity exhaust and maximize your fiber plant with 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s wavelengths on the same fiber. |
800 Gb/s of add/drop capacity in a single bay | Reduce OpEx through the use of less space while still delivering more add/drop capacity per rack inch than the competition as a direct result of Infinera’s large-scale photonic IC technology. |
Built-in bandwidth virtualization automatically optimizes your network | Never leave any network capacity stranded or unused, thanks to Infinera’s bandwidth virtualization. Using the integrated switch, the DTN allows you to optimize your network and maximize your revenue opportunity by grooming any service from 155 Mb/s to 100 Gb/s at every node. |
Any service including SONET/SDH, OTN, Ethernet, video and SAN services at every node | The Infinera DTN enables customers to offer a wide range of services from a common, high-density optical service platform. |
Support for terminal, 2-way, 3-way and 4-way junction sites | The service provider has total choice of network topology with no requirement for external switching equipment. |
GMPLS-based network intelligence | Drive down operating costs by making the network self-aware including: •Automatic inventory management •Automatic topology discovery •Point-and-click, end-to-end service provisioning •More flexible service protection and restoration •Optical/IP integration via an optical UNI |
Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) | Brings Moore’s Law to optical networks. The strategic value of a PIC is to enable low-cost OEO conversion, which facilitates and enables integrated switching as well as greater automation, control and performance. Also brings direct benefits of reduced size, power, costs and improved reliability. Results in lower CapEx, OpEx and a more flexible optical network. |
Separation of line and tributary interfaces | •Decouples the service interfaces from the DWDM line interfaces enabling the entire line side to act as a pool of bandwidth resources for any service. •Enables fast turn-up of any service •Supports any service from 155 Mb/s to 100 Gb/s over any line-side technology (10G or 40G wavelengths) •Future-proofs new service types and rates •Adds new services without affecting existing services •Simplifies inventory and sparing as line interface is not tied to the service •There is no stranded capacity on DWDM line cards as the service type changes •Sonet/SDH to Ethernet evolution •OTN client interfaces •New SAN services •New digital video services |
Fewer field-replaceable units | Experience has shown that in real-world networks the Infinera solution typically requires one-tenth the number of field-replaceable units compared to those of competitors. This translates directly into lower operational costs. |

Infinera DTN repair
The Infinera DTN is a WDM system for optical transport. It can generate WDM wavelengths and also Add, Drop and Switch them using a technique known as OTN Switching (Optical Transport Networking). It is carrier-class equipment and is used by many large Carriers and Telecom companies for optical transport within their network.

The DTN reference system shown above is the MTC shelf variant. This is also sometimes used as SLTE (Submarine Line Terminating Equipment) where connectivity is provided by means of undersea cables. The shelf must be equipped with the SLM card for this (Submarine Line Module). In Infinera terminology, the interfaces are provided by means of a small interface card that slots into the carrier card called a TAM (tributary adapter module) and then the transceiver fits into this smaller card. The optical transceiver is known as the TOM (tributary optical module).
